In 2008, what began as a 4chan backlash to censorship became something else entirely. A decentralized internet cult with symbols, rituals, and a unifying cause. No leaders. No funding. No permission asked. The first real proof that a crowd of strangers could move as one.
THE CENSORSHIP
A nine minute internal interview of Tom Cruise leaked onto YouTube. It was widely mocked, absurd, and according to the Church of Scientology, theirs. Their response was a flood of DMCA takedowns.
/b/ read the takedowns as censorship. /b/ was not wrong.
Within days, a coordinated response was being drafted on IRC, 711chan, and the newly minted partyvan.info wiki. Message boards became infrastructure. It wasn't a protest yet. It was something denser forming in real time.
THE MANIFESTO
A monotone voice over rolling clouds. 800,000 views in four days. A video manifesto became the press release. The movement now had scripture.

- BLACK FAX orgs worldwide received all black pages overnight, draining toner and tying up phone lines
- PRANK CALLS switchboards jammed with a thousand variations of the same meme script
- RICKROLL the Church's counter website was rickrolled relentlessly. Humor weaponized.
THEN THOUSANDS APPEARED
In cities around the world. Simultaneously. 7,000+ masked protesters in more than 100 cities. People who had never met, had no leaders, and had no names. Coordinated through nothing but shared belief and the internet itself.
No central plan. No funding. No permission. And yet they showed up on time, on message, everywhere at once.
THE FACE OF A CULT
The Church of Scientology was known to photograph its critics and pursue them long after the crowd had gone home. For ordinary people showing up to speak out, covering your face was not a costume. It was simple self protection, and care for the person standing next to you.
The Guy Fawkes mask was already legible. David Lloyd designed it for V for Vendetta and Warner Bros. mass produced it for the 2006 film. By the time protesters gathered in the streets, it had already become the symbol of Anonymous, the group behind the movement. One person, standing up to something far larger than themselves. That was the idea. And the mask let anyone carry it.
It did not stay niche. It became a quiet symbol of solidarity. A way for people to show up for each other, protect each other, and still speak with one voice. It traveled. From Chanology to Occupy, to the Arab Spring, to Hong Kong. Whenever ordinary people needed to stand together against something much bigger than themselves, the mask was already waiting.
IT FORESHADOWED CRYPTO
Project Chanology had everything a movement needs. A religion, even. Symbols. Mythology. Recurring rituals. Slogans. A unifying cause. A fluid, cell based pseudonymous membership that made insiders of anyone fluent in the culture.
In many ways, it foreshadowed what crypto communities would later become.
